John F. Duke (b. 1845 - d. 1935), born November 12, 1845, served for three years in the Indian campaigns in Kansas and Nebraska. He came to Arizona as a member of General George Armstrong Custer's Seventh Cavalry in 1869. In 1875, he purchased the City ranch on Granite Creek and was engaged in dairy cattle raising and mining for many years. In 1907, he became an owner and operator of the St. Michael's Hotel by buying out other partners. His daughter, Mary Margaret "Mamie" Duke (b. August 6, 1890 – d. June 16, 1988), operated the St. Michael from 1910 to 1942. Mamie is honored in the Territorial Women's Memorial Rose Garden. After his death on January 23, 1935, Mamie became the owner of the hotel. John was also active in the United Indian War Veterans and was elected national color bearer for life in 1931.
