Description

Exterior of the Mudhole Mine, Lynx Creek, Walker, Arizona.

The Mudhole mine was a short distance southwest of the Arizona Territorial town of Walker, and was worked to some extent prior to 1897. The elevation of the mine was 6401 feet. The mine’s primary commodity was gold, with secondary finds of silver, and smaller, or tertiary, amounts of copper.

The Mudhole mine’s production from 1897 to 1903 is reported to have been $480,000 in gold and silver. The main deposit seams of ore were reported to have contained from $7 to $15 in gold and silver. The November 3, 1899 edition of the Prescott Weekly Courier, P. 1, said optimistically: “Report is that a large and rich body of ore has been exposed at a depth of 600 feet in the Mudhole mine…preparations are now being made to put up a mill on the property.”

Despite the Mudhole’s successes early on, activity at the mine slowed down and then stopped around 1912.
