Cowboys and bison in House Rock Valley, near the Vermillion Cliffs.
Handwriting on back of photograph is: "Buffalo Herd on the range in House Rock Valley."
Bison were not a dominant part of the Arizona landscape, which was at the edge of their historic range. In 1906, a rancher brought dozens of bison to northern Arizona to crossbreed them with cattle. However, the operation produced no male calves and was abandoned. The state currently manages the animals.
