Description

Dr. Charles Albert Sewall (b. 1849 – d. 1925) was an officer and a surgeon in General George Crook's army. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1872 with a medical degree and entered the United States army as acting assistant surgeon the following year. From 1873 to 1890 he was stationed at frontier posts in New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and Texas.

Charles married Virginia (Evans) Sewall (b. 1859 - d. 1949) in 1889. They lived in Prescott, where he was stationed at Fort Whipple. They had two sons, Bashford Sewall (b. 1890 - d. 1976) and Charles Virginius Sewall (b. 1896 - d. 1969).

An affidavit by Andrew Kelley, a resident of Parajo, New Mexico, indicates that he accompanied Dr. Charles Albert Sewall and was present at his interview with Apache Chief Victorio. Mr. Kelley also related that Dr. Sewall was left in command of the outpost Ojo Caliente and "prevented in great measure...the Apache Indians from jumping the post" and capturing property and placing lives in jeopardy.
