Description

E.B. Gage, Prescott Fire Department Chief.

E.B. Gage (b.1837 - d.1913) was a prominent businessman with mining interests in the Arizona Territory. In the early 1880s, he was superintendent of the Grand Central Mine in Tombstone. In 1894, Gage served as president of the Congress Mine and Gold Company, moving to Prescott in 1895. He was director of the Prescott National Bank and the Santa Fe Phoenix and Prescott railroad. In 1899, Gage joined the committee to build the capitol for the territory. Then in 1901, he became president of Tombstone Consolidated Mines Company, reopening the Tombstone mines.

Staffing for the original Prescott Fire Department was comprised of four volunteer companies: Toughs, Dudes, O.K.s, and Mechanics Hooks and Ladders. In 1885, the city council formalized their support of local volunteer firefighters and created the positions of chief, and assistant chief, as well as the body of the fire department.
