Description

Photograph of Martina (Stephens) Kelly in Prescott, Arizona.

Martina (Stephens) Kelly (b. 1852 - d. 1920) was born January 22, 1852 in St. Joseph, Missouri and one of the pioneers of Prescott. Arriving on October 5, 1864 with her parents Nancy (Ball) and Varney Stephens, Martina Stephens witnessed first-hand the growth and development of the city. In 1868, she married William N. Kelly, her father's business partner and co-owner of Kelly & Stephens, a merchandise store on the northwest corner of Gurley and Montezuma Streets in business from 1870 until it burned down in the Fire of 1900. William also served as the mayor of Prescott for five years. The couple had one daughter, an Native American girl named Blossom, who later became an accomplished artist.

William Kelly passed away on January 7, 1917 and Martina died on March 11, 1920 due to illness. The couple are both buried in Prescott Masonic Cemetery.
