George C. Ruffner (b.1862 - d.1933) was born on November 16, 1862. He was a resident of Arizona for more than half a century and a native of Mason, Illinois. At age 18, he moved first to Maricopa County and a year later to Yavapai County where he first was a cowboy, then entered into the teaming business, and then mining. In 1893, he was appointed a deputy sheriff and was elected sheriff of Yavapai County in 1894. He was re-elected several times and served for 13 years. He married Mary B. "Molly" Birchett in April 1881. They had no natural children, but in February 1918, they adopted a son, George Spencer, and a daughter, Gladys Elizabeth, of Van A. & Laura Reichard. After the death of Laura, Van A. Reichard became the manager of the Ruffner stables and undersheriff in 1929. George C. Ruffner passed away on July 23, 1933.
