Levi Ruggles (b. ? - d. 1889) was a colonel, a Civil War veteran and Ohio native. He came to Arizona Territory in 1866 as a U.S. Indian Agent. He died September 14, 1889 in Florence, AZ. He founded Florence, one of the oldest European settlements in Arizona, in 1866 and named it after a favorite Ruggles family name. Early in 1869, he built his first family home, the site of which is identified by an historical marker. In August of that same year, with the aid of Governor Richard C. McCormick, he secured a post office. He was one of the principal merchants. Ruggles held numerous public offices, including being a member of the Council in the Legislative Assemblies of 1873 and 1877. He was also Register and Receiver of the Land Office. He was married to Cynthia M. Thorn. In January 1885 his youngest son died, and just previously he lost his 8-year old daughter and his wife. This print is a photo clipping from the Ninth Legislative Assembly Organizational Photo, O-187p.
