William Hickling Prescott (b. 1796 – d. 1859) was born on May 4, 1796. He was an American historian and Hispanist, who is widely recognized by historiographers to have been the first American scientific historian. Prescott was one of the most eminent historians of nineteenth century America and was an important figure in the development of history as a rigorous academic discipline. The City of Prescott, Arizona is named after him, although he never came to the area. This is a photograph of a sketch made of him. He died on January 28, 1859.
