Description

Stewart L. Udall (b. 1920 - d. 2010) was born in St. Johns, Arizona. He interrupted his studies at the University of Arizona to fight in World War II, when he served as a tail gunner in the 15th Army Air Forces and fought over Italy. He returned home to finish college and went on to law school, graduating in 1948. He founded a law firm in Tucson, where his brother Morris joined him as a partner. Udall was elected to Congress in 1954. He held his seat in Congress up until Kennedy appointed him to the position of Secretary of the Interior in 1960.

Udall served under presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson as Secretary of Interior and led Congress initiatives to aid victims of radiation exposure. He is best known for his efforts to expand the national park lands of the United States.

Back of photo reads: "Stewart Udall is the most athletic secretary of the interior to come down the pike in some time. A former varsity athlete at the University of Arizona, he showed that he could clear obstacles in his path as he easily leaped over a roadblock. Udall, accompanied by state officials, was on his way to inspect a new bridge near Clarkdale, Ariz., when he acted on impulse to demonstrate his track style."
