Description

This article photocopy is attached to the back of an envelope. The photograph shows the christening ceremony for the USS Arizona when it was launched June 19, 1915 in New York City.  Esther (Ross) Wray Hoggan of Prescott, then age 17 and shown at the top left, was selected by Arizona Governor George Hunt to launch the ship. The USS Arizona was sunk at Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941.

The two captions read: "Miss Esther Ross, of Prescott, Arizona, christening the new U.S. Super-Dreadnought" and "The United States Super-Dreadnought 'Arizona' leaving the Ways." The photograph appeared in The Shipping News, July 7, 1915.
