Description

Ella (Johnson) Johnston Burns (b. 1856 - d. 1935) was born on March 17, 1856, in Elm Grove, Wisconsin. She married James Bower Johnston on August 25, 1874. They had two children, Margaret Barney Johnston (b. 1876 - d. unknown), and James Clinton Johnston (b. June 28 - d. September 23, 1878). Her husband's death date is unknown, although the 1900 census lists Ella as a widow.

Ella moved to Prescott, Arizona in 1895, although it is unclear whether or not her husband James accompanied her. She earned a living giving piano lessons and painting portraits of prominent Prescott citizens, gaining a local reputation as a talented artist. She married her second husband, Michael G. Burns, a member of the Territorial Legislature of Arizona and mine owner, on June 2, 1906. After his death on March 23, 1912, Ella was appointed to several state offices by Governor George Wiley Paul Hunt and was active in the successful campaign for women’s suffrage in Arizona, which attended statehood.

Ella entered the Arizona Pioneer’s Home on March 3, 1931, an institution which her second husband had been instrumental in establishing. She died there on November 27, 1935.
