Description

Samuel “Sam” Goldwater was born in 1857 in California to Michael “Mike” and Sarah (Nathan) Goldwater. Sam, along with his other brothers, worked with his father to help establish and manage the Goldwater mercantile stores in California and Arizona. He was the brother to well-known Prescott community leader, Morris Goldwater, and was the uncle to Arizona Senator, Barry Goldwater. His obituary states, “Friday, September 9, 1898 Died--In Prescott, Sept 5th, 1898, Samuel Goldwater, aged about 41 years. Consumption was the fatal malady. He was a brother of Hon. Morris Goldwater and Henry Goldwater, of Prescott, and Barry Goldwater, of Phoenix. He went to Phoenix from the Pacific coast some months ago, in the hope that a change of climate might help him; he came to Prescott about three weeks ago. He was a former resident of this place, conducted a mercantile business here, and was ever regarded as a conscientious and responsible business man and citizen. The remains will be shipped to San Francisco for burial in the family cemetery.”
