Description

The newly built Howey's Hall, named after James Howey a local Prescott blacksmith and businessman, who had the building constructed. The Goldwater brothers, Joseph and Michael, rented this new building for their general merchandise store in summer of 1876. Next to Howey's Hall in this photograph, is James Howey's Flour and Grain Depot feed store and blacksmith shop.

Howey’s Hall, on the southeast corner of Cortez and Goodwin streets (where Prescott’s City Hall stands today [2018]) was under construction when Michael Goldwater visited Prescott in the early summer of 1876. James Howey owned a blacksmith shop nearby and was building a modern brick building at this desirable corner location across from the Plaza. It was a great business site for a new mercantile store and Michael quickly agreed to lease the two-story building upon its completion. The second floor contained a large multipurpose room, which was soon used as the meeting place of the first Masonic Lodge in Arizona.
