Description

Manuel Abiles (also spelled Aviles) was the first murderer to be legally hanged in Prescott in 1875. In April 1875, Abiles, William Malone, and Jesus Eredia were arrested by Yavapai County Sheriff Ed Bowers for the murder of Gregorio Eredia outside Camp Verde. Bowers brought the three men to Prescott where they were indicted for murder. Abiles was convicted of murdering Eredia and sentenced to death. On August 6, 1875, Abiles stated shortly before his hanging that he was present at Eredia's murder, but that it was William Malone who killed him. Abiles was executed that day.
