Dale L. Walker (b. 1935 – d. 2015) was born August 3, 1935 in Decatur, Illinois. He was the son of a career army sergeant. He served in the Navy in 1958 and the next year settled in El Paso, Texas where he met his wife, Alice (McCord) Walker.
Walker was the author or editor of more than 20 books related to military and Western history, Jack London studies and more. His works include The Boys of '98: Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders; Legends and Lies: Great Mysteries of the American West and Eldorado: The California Gold Rush.
He was president of the Western Writers of America from 1992 to 1994, was a four-time winner of the group’s Spur Award and received its Owen Wister Award for life achievement in 2000. He was inducted into the Western Writers Hall of Fame.
Walker was involved in virtually every aspect of the book business. He served as a university press director, newspaper book page editor, magazine editor, fiction editor for Forge Books, book columnist and reviewer, as well as writing historical books, magazine articles, and fiction.
In this photograph, he is standing in front of the Bucky O’Neill Monument, also known as the Rough Rider Monument, created by Solon Borglum that is located at the Courthouse Plaza in Prescott, Arizona.
He died December 08, 2015 and is buried in Fort Bliss National Cemetery, El Paso, Texas. At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, five children, 12 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
