Description

The back of the photograph carries the handwritten notation: "Tom Collins taken in 1870. Taken at Crown King.  James Cash - Pioneer Home."

There was a Thomas H. Collins who was born about 1845 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.  He lived in the Arizona Territory in the 1880s. (Source: Ancestry.com). There are also several newspaper mentions of a Tom Collins who was very active in the mining field in Bisbee (Copper Queen, Bonanza Circle, Junction Development, Calumet and Arizona) and also at the Verde Central mine in Jerome.  The August 2, 1922 Weekly Journal Miner refers to him as one of the best known miners in the country.

James Merrill Cash (b. 1868 - d. 1953) was born in Maine and died in the Pioneer's Home.  He was a cowboy & mule freighter, who arrived in the House Rock Valley, Arizona Territory on December 18, 1888. Cash may have been the donor of the photo. Additional information on Cash can be found at portraits 1700-0992-0001 and 1700-0992-0002.
