This cemetery dates back to 1865, when local rancher Charles Genung chose this open site as a burial ground so that mourners could not be ambushed by Native Americans. In 1956 the site was dedicated as a state monument.
This plaque reads: "Johnson - 1865, Maggie Hodge - 1892, John Fry - 1877, Lillie Hodge - 1892, Wycoff, Jerry Holbrook - 1892, Anna M. Smith - 1880, John Ragsdale - 1892, Baby Hamilton - 1885, Mrs. P.M. Henley - 1910, Joseph Hodge - 1885, Lee Hodge - 1918, Thomas Hodge - 1892, Henry Coe, Aggie Hodge - 1892, Coleman, Unknown Originally described as: One man, Two Mexicans, Four Indians."
