Description

This plaque reads: "This early territorial cemetery dates back to 1865. Local rancher Charles Genung chose the open site as a burial ground so that grave workers and mourners could not be ambushed easily by hostile Indians. Pioneer settlers and soldiers, Indians and Mexicans are buried on the site - victims of ranching accidents, Apache raids and the influenza epidemic in the 1890s. Their epitaphs are testimony to the harshness of life on the frontier. Through the efforts of Yarnell residents. The site was dedicated as a state monument in 1956."
