Charles Gray with a raccoon.
Charles "Charlie" Gray [Grey] was born in Maryland in 1856. His parents were both born in Maryland. He married Cassie, who was born circa 1854 in Washington Territory.
The US Census of 1880 taken in Prescott, Arizona lists Charles's occupation as laborer. He also worked as night watch security at the English Kitchen restaurant and as a caterer.
Charles was assessed a $10 fine by Judge Fleury for accidental discharge of his weapon at the Sazerac Saloon in Prescott in June 1887. The Arizona Weekly Journal-Miner article of the incident describes Gray as "the palest looking colored man." This may explain the 1880 census listing Charles and his wife's race as white.
Cassie died on January 13, 1891, unknown location. No death information can be found for Charlie.
