"Sure Shot," the horse of Sheriff George C. Ruffner (b. 1862 - d. 1933). On May 9, 1887, train robber Fleming "James" Parker (b. 1865 - d. 1898) broke out of the Prescott jail, went to the livery stable, and stole Sheriff Ruffner's prized mount, Sure Shot. After a long pursuit, Parker was captured on May 26, north of Flagstaff. Sure Shot was then recovered by Ruffner. The horse lived for 20 years and was buried in Phoenix on a small farm that is now the Biltmore Hotel.
