Description

Three dogs near a tent and boxes at James Cash's campsite.

The first mining by Anglo Americans in Yavapai County began in 1863, with the discovery of gold deposits in Weaver Creek. Until the opening of the Southern Pacific railroad, two-thirds of the bullion shipped from the Territory was produced in Yavapai County and nearly half the mining locations in Arizona were made within its borders. Mining camps began as collections of tents and as populations increased, buildings were constructed.

Handwriting on back of photograph is: "Camp Site and dogs of James Cash - Pioneer of 1888."
