Description

On the back of the photograph is an excerpt from "This is My Life" by Mary Kate (Otis) Blake about the years she and her husband lived in Naco. Mary was the daughter of Theodore Wells Otis (b. 1835 - d. 1916) and Pamela F. Libbey Otis (b. 1835 - d. 1911).

"For two years my helper was the little Chinese girl, June Moy. A virtual slave, she had run away from her cruel foster father in Prescott's China Town to my mother (Mrs. T. W. Otis), who became her legal guardian. The money we paid June went toward her education as a missionary to her own people in China. My parents trained her for this career, and we encouraged her and taught her in our home. She was sweet to the children, perfectly trustworthy; but though she could do the routine tasks, she was incapable of taking the initiative."
