Description

Walnut Grove Dam was built in 1886, or at least it was begun in August of that year and finished in October 1887.  The dam was 135 feet thick at the base and 10 feet thick at the top. It was 110 feet long at the base and 400 feet long on top.  It was 110 feet high.  The waste way was 30 feet wide and 8 feet deep.

The lower, or "service dam," was begun in January or February 1889 and completed in January 1890.  This lower dam was 15 miles or so below the upper or storage dam.  This dam was about 30 feet high - 60 feet wide at the base - 10 feet wide at the top and 200 feet long on top. It had a waste way that was 60 feet wide.

The lake formed by the upper dam was 2 1/2 miles long , 3/4 mile wide and covered 1100 acres. The water averaging 60 feet in depth. The cost of building was a little over one million dollars.

The dam was destroyed by flood on February 21, 1890 drowning 60 persons or more of whom 43 were found and buried.
