In the early morning hours on Saturday February 21, 1890, the upper Walnut Grove Dam, on the Hassayampa River broke. The dam was not able to hold back the rising flood waters after heavy rains and melting snow pack had occurred for many days prior to the break. The death toll was estimated at between 70 to 100 persons and is still considered the greatest natural disaster in Arizona history.
