Description

George Washington Hance (b.1848 - d. 1932) was born in Sevier County, Tennesee on October 7, 1848. His mother was Rachel Hance.

He married Parthessy Harden Rutledge in 1878. They had four children: Josephine P. Hance, George H. Hance, Francis M. Hance, Eva Hance. Parthessy died in 1916. George married Evelyn Grace Jassby in 1917. She left him within a year of the marriage. In 1920 he married Frances "Fanny" (unknown last name).

George was a Civil War veteran. He mustered out of the Army in 1868. He and his brothers Jim and John immediately left for Prescott, Arizona. They then moved on to the Verde Valley in Arizona.

George had several occupations during his lifetime. He was a farmer, rancher, sutler, notary public, storekeeper, miner, justice of the peace, postmaster, census official and road superintendent. He was one of the most respected men who ever lived in the Verde Valley.

George was a prolific writer of letters. Some were addressed to and archived by the Yavapai county historian Sharlot Hall, and they document much of the history of the Verde Valley.

Burial: George W. Hance died on July 30, 1932 in San Bernadino County, California. He is buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Prescott, Arizona.
