Description

Carmelita (Mendoza) Campbell (b. 1831 - d. unknown) was born in Chile in South America. She was the first wife of Honorable John G. Campbell, Sr. They had one daughter. John G. Campbell was a prominent businessman and Arizona Territorial legislator.

Carmelita sued for divorce in 1877, charging cruelty. She was awarded $10,000, one-half of common property. She brought a second suit  in 1885 with additional complaint but case was dismissed in 1886 as unwarranted.

She owned substantial interest in mines, including the Gila Monster claim near Yuma and the Carmelita Mine, which was named after her.
