Handwriting on front of photograph is: "Iron Springs, four miles west of Prescott."
In 1874, Bob Atkinson, an army veteran in Arizona Territory, went to the Iron Springs District near Prescott, Arizona, to prospect. He located a claim or two, receiving squatter’s right to Iron Springs and additional acreage. Atkinson then moved cattle into the area and built a large two story house. As the road was completed from Prescott to Skull Valley, he opened a stage station for meals, change of horses, and lodging. A bar and grocery store were also added.
