Description

Far view of gravestones through entrance pillars.

The Nelson Memorial Cemetery is located on Historic Route 66 between Peach Springs and Seligman, on the line between Yavapai and Mohave Counties. The town of Nelson was reportedly named after Fred Nelson, who was a conductor on the construction train of the Santa Fe Railroad when the track was laid in the region in 1883. Nelson noticed the abundance of fresh lime and other construction raw materials near the region. Subsequently, the Grand Canyon Lime and Cement Company was organized in 1907, and the plant remains active today. The town of Nelson, along with the cemetery, was abandoned.
