Description

Bashford Family patriarch Coles Bashford (b. 1816 - d. 1878) is best known as the fifth governor of Wisconsin from 1856 to 1858 and Prescott businessman. He was admitted to the bar in 1842 in New York at the age of twenty-six years. In 1848, Coles married Frances Adams Forman and the couple had seven children, born between 1848 to 1869. He first traveled to Arizona with President Lincoln's officials in early 1864. He was then appointed attorney general for the Arizona Territory and was the first attorney admitted to practice in Arizona.

Coles moved to Prescott in 1864 was elected to a seat in the Arizona Second Legislature in the spring of 1864 and was instrumental in the selection of Anson P.K. Safford as Arizona Governor in 1868. In 1874, he partnered with his brother Levi in various Prescott businesses, eventually establishing the Bashford-Burmister general store. Coles died in 1878, and Mrs. Bashford relocated to Oakland, California, with her children and settled in the area until her death on December 1, 1911. The Bashford family plot, including the gravestones of Coles and Frances, is located in Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, California.
