Description

The headstone of Olive Ann (Oatman) Fairchild (b. 1837- d.1903) at West Hill Cemetery located in Sherman, Texas. Olive Oatman, later Fairchild was born in Illinois. In 1851, she was a Mormon girl of fourteen and orphaned after Yavapai Indians attacked her family on their journey west. Shortly after the attack, she was traded to the Mojave Indians and lived with them for two years. Olive Oatman married cattleman John Fairchild in 1865 and became some what of a celebrity among Anglos due to her blue facial tattoos that were given to her while living with the Mojaves.
