The first grade school in Arizona Territory. Built in 1876 in Prescott, Arizona after a special bond election, on north side of Gurley Street. The school provided four classrooms on the first floor and territorial offices on the top floor. Principal Moses Sherman administered Prescott Free Academy and taught the three upper grades while his sister, Lucy, taught the three lower ones. By 1900, the academy was considered too small for Prescott's growing population and Washington School, a much larger school, was constructed in 1903.
This photograph view shows the pine tree under which Jessie Benton Fremont used to tell stories to the academy pupils on Friday afternoons.
