Description

Bill Stewart in the American Legion National Rifle Team group portrait.  In 1940, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Blue Team became the winners in the V. F. W. American Legion National Rifle and Pistol Championship at Camp Perry, Ohio.  Bill Stewart is located in the back row, sixth from left with arrow pointing at him, represented Arizona in this championship. This legionnaire team members include: Lt. Colonel Otis Barnes, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Major Thomas Bonner, Clovis, New Mexico; Harry Forrest, Denver, Colorado; Roy Emerson, Superior, Wisconsin; John Holmes, Lafayette, Indiana; Harry Pfeifer, Denver, Colorado; Frank Reynolds, East Lynn, Massechusetts; Warren Tarr, Monterey, California; Harry Wheat, Louisville, Kentucky; Victor Massie, Los Angeles, California; H. D. Emerson, North Hollywood, California (captain) & William "Bill" Stewart, Prescott, Arizona (coach).

William "Bill" F. Stewart was born in Marion, Indiana on January, 19, 1890. He served in the Navy during World War I. After the war he was a fireman at the Whipple Veterans Hospital in Prescott, Arizona. Bill, as he was usually called, was well known in Prescott as an expert rifleman and was active in teaching young people in the community about safety in the handling of firearms. He was awarded for his marksmanship during his lifetime. He participated in the matches of the Civilian Marksmanship Program at Camp Perry, Ohio.  Bill died on July 6, 1968 and is buried in Holcomb-Union Cemetery, Jackson County, Kentucky.
