Launched on June 19, 1915 in New York Harbor, the USS Arizona was bombed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor with a loss of 1,177 crew members. The wreck still lies at the bottom of Pearl Harbor. The USS Arizona Memorial was dedicated on May 30, 1962; it straddles the ship’s hull. Esther Ross, the daughter of a Prescott, Arizona pioneer family, christened the ship. Due to the recently passed ban on alcohol, two bottles were used, one full of sparkling wine from Sandusky, Ohio, and the second filled with water from the Roosevelt Dam. The bottle in the photo is the one that was filled with wine, and Esther Ross’ name is on the label.
