Description

Indian students exercising at Camp Verde Indian School. Handwriting on back of photograph is: “taken 1912 by J. E. Axton.”

The Indian School in Camp Verde, Arizona was established in 1907 with 27 pupils. In addition to reading, writing, and arithmetic, girls were taught general housework and boys were taught industrial work, until the school was closed in the mid-1920s. Camp Verde public schools began allowing Indian children to enroll in the 1940s.
