Description

Santa Fe, Prescott & Phoenix Railroad, freight wreck.

On August 5, 1901, a freight train wreck occurred south of the Point of Rocks in the Granite Dells at a bridge above a large arroyo. The wreck was caused by a malfunctioning water spout in the nearby hills and water rushed down causing the bridge to collapse, bringing with it all the cars except the caboose.  This cab contained the crew and had not crossed the bridge yet. Said crew, engineer Gus Barth and fireman George E. Thorne, received injuries from the ordeal (albeit not serious ones), and had to be rushed to Mercy Hospital in Prescott. There were no fatalities.  Of the cargo carried in the nine main cars, only three cars of lumber were able to be recovered.
