Description

Skull Valley EL. 4250

According to Arizona Place Names by Willis C. Barnes, the name dates back to 1864 and derives from the fact that soldiers in Captain Hargrave's company of the First California Volunteers, found piles of bleached Indian skulls here while escorting Cales Bashford to Tucson in March 1864. The skulls were the remnants of a battle between Apaches and Maricopas. In August 1866, at least 35 more skulls were added to the bleaching bones as the result of a fight between five citizens, and four soldiers who battled more than 100 Indians who had stopped the train for the second time that month. A private citizen went for help at Camp McPherson, as Skull valley was called. A bloody conflict followed after which 23 Indians lay dead in the immediate vicinity.

P.O. Est. April 26, 1869. John C. Dunn, Postmaster
