The United Verde Copper Company Smelter was located in the town of Clarkdale, Arizona, It was 4 1/2 miles from the United Verde mine at Jerome, Arizona. The matte from the mine was transported to the smelter for processing or "roasting" through the 2 1/2 mile long Hopewell Tunnel. The Clarkdale plant was equipped with four blast furnaces, when first constructed in 1915, and also with three reverberatory furnaces. Blast furnaces were of primary importance in the production of matte. Reverberatory furnaces were used mainly for treatment of fine ore and flue dust.
