Description

One of the largest copper mines in the United States, the "Big Hole" was an open-pit mine owned originally by the United Verde Copper Company. It was located in the Verde Valley, Yavapai County, Arizona and included the mining communities of Jerome and Clarkdale. In addition to copper, the mine also produced gold and silver. It was discovered by James S. Douglas, son of Phelps Dodge President James S. Douglas, Sr.
