Description

Portrait of Mary A. (Johnson) Brown (b. 1823 - d. 1904).  The writing on the back of the photograph states that she was a charter member of Prescott’s [First] Congregational Church in 1880.

Mary A. (Johnson) Brown (b. 1823 – d. 1904) was born December 4, 1823 in Massachusetts.  She married James H. Brown June 11, 1857 in Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts. She came to Prescott in 1875 from Newburyport, Massachusetts with her husband and son. She and her husband were the parents of Thomas Brown (John Thomas Brown or J. T. Brown). The family were well-known vegetable growers or farmers.  On July 14, 1904, Mary Brown died at the family ranch southwest of Prescott, Arizona. Her obituary indicates that she was a “consistent member of and regular attendant of the Congregational church.” Her funeral services, held at the church, were conducted by Reverend H. B. Long.
