James William Smith (b.1860 - d.1943) was born in Albia, Iowa on May 18,1860. He was the son of Daniel Smith and Eleanor (Kincaid) Smith, birth dates and locations unknown.
James married Emma Lou Dilliner in Lincoln County, Missouri on January 26, 1881. Their children were Mary Deliah Wright, Von Price Smith, Alta Bernice Blackburn, Clara Myrtle Johnson, Roy Lebbeous Smith, Viva Green Johnson.
James was a stockman in Walnut Grove, Arizona Territory in March, 1889. He was installed as a Masonic officer in 1894. James was appointed Postmaster in Stanton, Arizona in1900 and he was listed in the Prescott city directory in 1903.
James was elected Sheriff of Yavapai County, Arizona in January, 1909. He appointed various men as his deputies during his term: J.C. Tovrea, Jake Copple, George Meade, John Long, F.F. Barlett and William Howard.
He was listed in the 1910 census as living on South Mount Vernon Street in Prescott.
He was a member of the Jerome, Arizona Elks Lodge #1361 in 1921, the year that lodge came to the Prescott Elks theater for a show. That year, James was elected to Loyal Knight in the Jerome lodge.
James died in Flagstaff on April 3, 1943. He was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Green City, Sullivan County, Missouri.
