This circa 13th century Pueblo III basket is a twilled ring basket constructed of yucca or agave and willow, approximately 80% complete. Radiocarbon dated to 750 bp +/- 50 years. Found along the Colorado River.
Native American baskets are woven with more than willow and sumac- they are also woven with the tribal beliefs of the weaver. Baskets were used by most early inhabitants of North America, with the oldest basket found in the Southwest dating to about 8,000 years ago. Ancestral Puebloan sites (forerunners of today’s Pueblo Indians) contained ancient woven baskets.
