Description

The front and side views of the Homestead House building at Red Rock after recent restoration, showing the board and batt siding, two-over-two single-hung windows and the original chimney. Schuerman Rock is pretty much obscured by the trees.

This house was occupied by Johann George Heinrich (Henry) Schuerman (b. 1852 - d. 1920) and his family. Johann emigrated to the United States from Germany in 1872 and later moved to Prescott, Arizona Territory by 1884, where his cousin, George Schuerman, owned the Sherman Hotel. He married Dorette Titgemeier in 1884 and they settled on a 160-acre farm in Red Rock to grow grapes and produce wine. Henry died in 1920 and Dorette passed away in 1940.

Today, the 40-acre homestead has been broken up into smaller parcels. In 2022, historian Nancy Burgess is preparing a nomination to the National Register of Historic Places for the Schuerman Homestead, which is now the property of the Sedona Historical Society.
