During the summer of 1971 the Western film Junior Bonner, starring Steve McQueen and Barbara Leigh and directed by Sam Peckinpah, was made in Prescott. Peckinpah and the cast had the full cooperation of the Frontier Days/World's Oldest Rodeo and Bill Pierce, president of the Fair Association and the Prescott Jaycees rodeo chairman. This strong relationship allowed Peckinpah to direct the Bonner float and McQueen in the parade scene while the actual parade took place on July 3, 1971. Junior Bonner is considered a Western classic and brought Prescott's rodeo to the silver screen.
