Description

Portrait of Harriet Zaff Bourke (seated) with one of her daughter's Victorian Zaff (left) and her son John Bourke, Jr. (right).

Harriet was born in Germany in 1827.  Harriet married a man by the name of Zaff and had two daughters, Louisa and Victoria Zaff, who unfortunately died.  Harriet then met and married John Bourke in California in 1860.  Harriet and John had a son named John Cook Bourke in 1862.  Together, the blended family came to Arizona in 1863, where John worked as a miner in the San Fransico Mining District, Mohave County, Arizona Territory.  By 1864, the family had moved to Prescott, where John was a manager of The Quartz Rock saloon owed by William Hardy.  However, in 1866 John became the Yavapai County Sheriff until 1867.  Unfortunately, John died in March 1868 leaving behind Harriet to raise their son, John Jr., and his stepdaughters Louisa and Victoria Zaff.
