WIlliam Francis Nichols (b.1852 - d.1917) was born on October 8, 1852 in Sterling, Massachusetts. He was the son of William N. Nichols, born in Massachusetts, and Emily (Haywood) Nichols, born in Massachusetts.
The family moved to Sacramento, California and lived there during the 1860s and 1870s. W.F. moved to the Arizona Territory in 1880, settling in Tombstone and then Willcox. He had financial interests in lumber, cattle ranching and real estate. He was the Justice of the Peace in Willcox for 18 years.
He married Nora Butterfield on July 18, 1898 in Napa, California.
W.F. was the 13th Secretary of the Arizona Territory (A.T.) and served from 1902-1906. He was recommended by A.T. Governor Brodie, and nominated by President Theodore Roosevelt. Governor Brodie recommended W.F. to succeed him as Territorial Governor bur W.F. declined.
In January, 1908 he had several personal items stolen from his home.
Handwriting on photograph reads: "Interior view, Willcox, Nichols.W.F. Nichols-Secretary of State under Governor's Oakes Murphy and Joseph Kibbey-Justice of the Peace at Willcox for some years".
W.F. retired to California. He died on November 15, 1917 in Los Angeles. He was cremated and interred there at Rosedale Cemetery.
