Mr. Bancroft and four others on horseback at Castle Hot Springs, Arizona.
The original Castle Hot Springs resort property in Morristown, Arizona opened in 1896 and it claimed the title of Arizona's first wellness resort. The Apache Wars discouraged development of the area until the 1880s. Frank Murphy purchased the property for construction of a health resort. It was completed in 1896 and named "Castle Hot Springs." The resort operated commercially until the main building was destroyed by fire in 1976. It was sold in 2014. The property was purchased and a major renovation was begun in March, 2018. Castle Hot Springs reopened to the public in February, 2019. Several celebrities stayed at the resort including the Rockefellers, Astors, Cabots, and Pews. President Theodore Roosevelt stayed there when visiting the area to see the construction of the Roosevelt Dam. During World War II in 1943-44, the military used the resort for recuperation of injured veterans, including John F. Kennedy.
Handwriting on photograph reads: "Clarke, Coff., Bancroft. Hot Springs".
