This photo shows the members of the Women's Relief Corps. of Prescott, Arizona. Many of Prescott's prominent women were involved in this organization.
The Women's Relief Corps. was instrumental in helping veterans around Prescott, as well as donating supplies to Fort Whipple during the Spanish-American War. Frances Willard Munds was a regular speaker at their meetings. This organization was originally founded as the official women's auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in 1883 and was designed to assist the GAR, promote and help run Memorial Day, petition the federal government for nurses pensions, along with other duties. Today [2021], it is largely dedicated to historical preservation of research and official documentation related to the WRC and GAR.
From left to right bottom row is Maud or Mabel Cordiner, Maud or Mabel Cordiner, Rosalie Schindler (Pauline O'Neill's mother), Catharine Dake, Mary Bowen and Pauline O'Neill (Corps. President). Top row includes Lulu Moden, Minnie Cline, Mary DeWitt, (?) Lentz, Henrietta Maxwell and an unidentified woman (SHM L&A staff does not know which name goes with each woman in the top row).
NOTE: This photo was misidentified in the past as the Women's or Ladies' Literary Group of Prescott. However, the women are all wearing Relief Corps badges.
