Description

Floyd Albert Burmister (b. 1882 – d. 1952) was born June 22, 1882 in Indianola, Iowa. His parents were Albert James Burmister (1853-1929) and Canzada Stockton Burmister (1855 – 1940). He had three siblings: Robert Clinton Burmister (1882-1939), Lola Rozella Burmister Bassett (1887-1973) and Charles Ramond Burmister (1890 – 1959), and a step-sibling, Frederick James Burmister (1875 – 1899).

At age 6, Mr. Burmister came to Arizona with his parents. They settled in open range country on the Agua Fria in the vicinity of Mayer, Arizona and started raising cattle, later acquiring an extensive ranch near Dugas, Arizona. Mr. Burmister continued in the cattle business for 30 years when he then moved to the vicinity of Wickenburg, Arizona where he operated mines nearby and at Hillside, Vulture and Congress. He became widely known in the Verde Valley for his horsemanship and rode in all the early Frontier Day parades in Prescott.

Mr. Burmister married Maggie Allen on Dec. 22, 1903 in Cherry Creek, Yavapai County, Arizona. She died four months after their marriage at the age of 25. After her death, Floyd married Maggie's older sister Mattie Allen (1877-1922) on Nov 28, 1905. Following her death, he married Rose Alice Carr (1883-1956).

Surviving are his widow, Alice Rose, and four daughters, Mrs. Viola Strojost and Mrs. Alice Wilkins, both of El Monte, California; Mrs. Margaret Kilpatrick of Central Valley, California; and Mrs. Lola Adair of Phoenix, Arizona. Other survivors are a brother, Charles Burmister of Mayer and a sister, Mrs. Lola Bassett of Phoenix.

Handwritten on the back of the photograph is Jan 1897.
