Jean Alice Shoquist (b. 1924 – d. ?) was born December 1924 in Lone Tree, Iowa. She was the daughter of Walter Evald Shoquist and Bertha Rose McCurdy of Iowa City, Iowa. She had two siblings: Carol Ruth Shoquist and Joseph Shoquist.
In 1946 she left Iowa to become the city reporter for the Prescott Evening Courier in Prescott, Arizona for one year. She also taught English and journalism at Prescott High School. A November 19, 1946 story in the Iowa City Press-Citizen stated that Jean had served previously as the society editor of the Press-Citizen. Jean was a June 1946 graduate of the School of Journalism at the University of Iowa. She was a member of Theta Sigma Phi, the national honorary fraternity for women in journalism. She also received an MA degree from the University of Iowa.
An April 1947 story in the Phoenix, AZ Arizona Republic indicated that Jean was on the staff of the Arizona Times and that she was associated with the American Association of University Women. A Prescott Evening Courier story August 11, 1947 reported that she and her brother Joe came up from Phoenix to the Smoki ceremonials.
An August 6, 1951 story in the Iowa-City, Iowa Press-Citizen indicated that Jean, then of Cedar Falls, Iowa and R. Bruce Hughes of Sioux City, Iowa were wed August 4. At the time of her marriage, she was an assistant in charge of public school relations at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.
Her husband received his MA and JD degree from the University of Iowa. At the time of their marriage, he was practicing law as an associate at the firm of Reed and Beers, Waterloo, Iowa.
On February 11, 1956, a son, Craig, was born to the couple. No information was found on other children.
